Tom Summerlin Obituary

Tom Summerlin, a beloved husband, father, son, brother, drummer, and friend, passed away peacefully in Springfield, IL, on April 13th, surrounded by his loving family. He was 66 years young. Born in Atlanta GA, on March 7th 1958, Tom was the beloved son of Aurelia Watkins and Carter Summerlin AKA Diddy. Tom’s Stepfather, Dave Watkins was his hero. Tom cherished his siblings Lisa Summerlin, Jim Summerlin, and he is reunited in heaven with his brother Joe Summerlin.

Tom was the devoted husband to Kimbra Summerlin and the cherished Stepfather to Emily Ramey, (Alex) Ayrin Hintz (Ryan). He is also remembered fondly by Ellyn Ellis, with whom he shared many years and memories, and their daughters Shannon Lyons (Matt), Kelsea Ellis, Shelby Ellis, and Cara Ellis. He is also remembered by Jeremy & Nicole Summerlin, with whom he shared earlier chapters of his life. Tom was blessed with seven grandchildren: Murphy, Everly, Tessla, Phoenix, William, Oliver, and Emmit.

Tom was a passionate drummer and dedicated member of the Band the Sleeping Dogzz for 25 years. One of his greatest accomplishments was his tour with the band ZZ Trip, a ZZ Top cover band that toured throughout the county. He would often be found jamming out on stage, his rhythmic talents and love for rock music electrifying audiences far and wide.

Outside of his musical pursuits, Tom found immense joy in riding his motorcycle, feeling the freedom of the open road beneath him. He was a true adventurer, always seeking new experiences and embracing life to the fullest. Tom had a special bond with his dogs, who were more than just pets—they were his loyal companions and closest confidants. His heart was full of love for them, and they brought him endless happiness throughout his life. In addition to his immediate family, Tom leaves behind a vast network of friends and band family who were touched by his kindness, humor, and unwavering loyalty. His infectious laughter and warm spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Tom is now reunited with his beloved parents and brother in heaven, as well as his cherished Soul dog, Spayder, who brought him comfort and companionship throughout the years.

A private Memorial Service is being held for the family.

A celebration of Tom's life will be held on June 9th 2024 at the Curve Inn; details will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Tom’s final request that donations to help cover medical expenses incurred during Tom’s illness be made online at https://www.gofundme.com/create/fundraiser/review/tom-summerlin in Tom's honor. Though Tom may no longer be with us in body, his legacy of love, family, dogs, and rock music will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him. Rock In Peace
